TSG Local Group: SurreyYoung Surrey Lawyers
For many members, one of the principal attractions with belonging to an organisation such as Young Surrey Lawyers (YSL) is the opportunity to participate in community events and to encourage those taking their first steps towards a career in the legal profession. On 30th June 2005 the YSL’s newly elected chairperson, Samantha Jago, gave a talk to pupils at Guildford Law College} with an interest in pursuing a career in law. For many of us it was such a talk that first inspired us to take up law and judging by the positive feedback, which Samantha received from those who attended, a similar impact was made.
On a similar note, November saw several YSL members attend the College of Law, Guildford, to judge or play the role of clients in the annual client interviewing competition organised for law students at Kingston University, the University of Surrey and the College of Law. The day was an unquestionable success with participants being marked on their professional approach and their ability to relate to their prospective client’s problems and to provide coherent and appropriate advice. The eventual winners were Michelle Morgan and Cleo Pike from Surrey University. In the New Year, YSL intends to continue its community role and plans are already afoot for several members to give presentations at other schools and colleges within Surrey.
YSL has always had a strong social element giving members the opportunity to let their hair down, swap stories and share their stresses and strains with others at a similar stage of their legal careers. In recent months the YSL social committee has excelled itself organising quizzes, meals out and, of course, the now traditional Christmas curry evening. These events have all been well attended and thoroughly enjoyable and the proposed events for the New Year look set to continue the social committee’s good work.
The YSL itself has also undergone some significant recent changes with a new committee being formed to further increase the size of the society and the services it can provide to young solicitors. The YSL committee are always interested in receiving ideas or feedback from any current or prospective members and, in particular, are actively seeking to recruit additional committee members. Please contact us at the address below if you have any concerns, suggestions or if you are interested in joining the committee.
All in all, the last few months of 2005 have been a busy but successful period during which great changes have been made to the society’s organisation that will undoubtedly lead to an even more vibrant and successful YSL in 2006.
