TSG Local Group: Southampton

Southampton TSG

A new TSG has emerged in the Hampshire area - the Southampton TSG.  Although we are called STSG, we do in fact cover the whole of Hampshire.

About us

The STSG is run by a committee made up of representatives from local firms.  The committee is broadly split into the social team and the sponsorship team, and we have a Chair, Treasurer and Membership Secretary, as well as a National Representative who attends the national TSG meetings at the Law Society.  Our committee mainly work in Portsmouth, Fareham and Southampton. We have a representative on the Hampshire Incorporated Law Society committee.

Our Philosophy

We feel that there are not enough opportunities for trainees in the Hampshire area to meet each other and socialise.  In our firms we may know a few other trainees, and we may have contacts with those we did our LPC with.  However, this can become quite blinkered, and this is where the TSG comes in!

The group's events are an opportunity for trainees to meet up and share experiences.  If you are a sole trainee in a smaller firm, you may think that only you have to stand by the photocopier for hours.  If you are in larger firm, you may not realise what happens in other firms with a different style.  It's good to know that you are not alone!  Furthermore, we can begin to develop that camaraderie that you see in court amongst the partners and barristers. Plus - it's a good excuse to have a good time!

Our events

The STSG restarted in October 2005.  We launched with a successful launch event, sponsored by Chadwick Nott and attended by over 50 attendees. As a result, more than 90 individuals are now registered on our mailing list and this is sure to increase with time.

The STSG Christmas event was held on Thursday 1 December.  The first stop was the popular 'Orange Rooms' bar in Southampton followed by a curry at the impressive and recently refurbished Natraj Restaurant. The event was sponsored by Michael Page, who were in attendance.  The evening was a success - with again around 50 members joining us in the Orange Rooms, and around 30 for a delicious curry.

The 16 February 2006 saw the second Chadwick Nott drinks event, held in the hugely popular Apartment 26.  this was another chance for our membership to mix and mingle, and do some legal networking.

2 March 2006 saw the Shelter Quiz - which again was held at Apartment 26.  A good time was had by all - but the team "Charlie and his Angels" from Paris Smith & Randall LLP took the prize - which was sponsored by totallylegal.com.  TM Lewin provided a raffle prize on the day - the money raised through the raffle also went to Shelter.  In total, the sum of £360 was raised for the charity!

We held a careers event in association with Hudson recruitment on 6 April 2006.  This event was aimed at trainees appraoching qualification, and was a huge success.  The event will be repeated next year and it is likely that we shall hold a NQ event in the autumn.

The 29 April 2006 saw the hugely awaited STSG Ball!  This year saw a 1950s "Grease" theme - with all the trimmings!  Great 50s band, "the Starlites" performed rock 'n' roll classics - there was even a hand jive contest going on!  A jingli' juke box provided the tunes in the second room, where people could experience the fantastic festival (complete with side-shows) from the Grease film.  The evening went swimmingly, and was one to remember.  Congratulations to the STSG Ball Commitee who did a fabulous job putting everything together, and further, thanks to our sponsors - without whom the night would not have been possible.  Particular thanks to Hudson Recruitment for their contribution.

Get Involved

It's that time of year.  The STSG Committee are approaching qualification and the end of their tenure with the Group.  Among those "retiring" are Kat Gibson (Chair), Jai Kumar (Treasurer) and Akaego Ugwu (Social Secretary).  These positions are up for grabs, as are other commitee roles.

If this sounds like something that you would be interested in, please let us know by emailing southampton@tsg.org.  We want YOU for our 2006/07 Committee!!  Be part of your local scene and "give something back" - and, most importantly, have a laugh doing it!
