MINIMUM SALARIES FOR TRAINEES

SALARY INFORMATION

1.   Minimum Salary for Trainees

Firms must pay their trainees at or above the Law Society Minimum Salary rate but the Council of the Law Society recommends that firms pay their trainees at or above the Recommended Salary levels.

The salary levels are reviewed annually.

a) From 1 August 2005 to 31 July 2006, the minimum salary for a trainee solicitor working in Central London is £16,450.

b) From 1 August 2005 to 31 July 2006 the minimum salary for a trainee solicitor working in the rest of England and Wales is £14,720.

c) The new salary levels will apply to all training contracts - first and second years.

d) No waivers will be granted below £12,150

e) From 1 August 2005, he recommended salary for trainees working in Central London is £17,050

f) From 1 August 2005, the recommended salary for trainees working outside Central London is £15,180

It is worth remembering that any firm can gain an exemption from the need to pay the Minimum Salary.  However, this will need to be granted by the Law Society and will depend on the firm's own circumstances.  For more information, visit the Law Society's website.
