SUPPORT OF THE LEGAL AID PRACTITIONERS' GROUP

The TSG has long supported the LAPG and their work.  Indeed, the TSG is proud to work closely with the Group and the Young Legal Aid Lawyers.  The TSG supports and assists the Group with their annual conference, putting on an afternoon of talks for both trainees and students considering a lengthy career in legal aid work.

The year's conference is to be held on 6 October 2006 in Cardiff.

Please see below for details.

The TSG will run one afternoon session, and the YLAL another.  The sessions will run in tandem, so that both students and trainees are exposed to all of the programme.

Legal Aid Lawyers – The Fourth Emergency Service

YLAL Student Programme 1.45pm – 2.45pm, YLAL Trainee Programme 3.00pm – 4.00pm

With the future of legal aid on the brink, Young Legal Aid Lawyers (YLAL) present a first aid tool kit for the next generation. The panel session will focus on current developments in legal aid practice and successful campaign methods to go beyond individual cases to influence law as well as policy. Students are especially welcome to the first afternoon session (1.45 – 2.35) with Trainees invited to the second (2.50 – 3.40).

Young Legal Aid Lawyers will provide an introduction to legal aid and discuss what motivates us to eschew perks and platinum gold in favour of careers built on actively promoting social inclusion and protecting the rights of those most vulnerable in our society.

Liberty’s Campaigns Co-ordinator, Doug Jewell, will give an introduction to the work carried out by Liberty and discuss how lawyers can link up with media, politics and community to effect change and promote human rights at a local, national and international level.

Leading Legal Aid Practitioner, Nicola Mackintosh of Mackintosh Duncan solicitors, will explore the invaluable work carried out by legal aid lawyers, who fight fearlessly both for the individual and in the public interest. She will illustrate this with some recent landmark cases and campaigns she has spearheaded.
