TSG Skills Events - The Next Step

The TSG organises a selection of Skills Events for sections of its membership.  This year, the way that these events will work is being shaken up, so keep checking back on this page to find out what will be happening in your area for you!

To give you a taster of what will be available, the below is the framework from last year that the Group will be building on for 2006.

Each event takes place at an important time for the TSG membership and is designed to ensure that you are well equipped to maximise the next stage in your career. You will leave the event focussed and informed both about the next steps to take and the current legal market. Presentations will be by professionals and "experts" in their field. Outside considerations, which may also influence your future path, such as finance, stress management, image and personal development, will also be covered.  You have a chance to talk to those who have been there - and pick their brains about how to go forward.

Student Skills Events

These events are held in conjunction with one of the TSG partners - LawCareers.Net.  To obtain up to date information on these we recommend that you register for the LCN newsletter - this is easily done at www.LawCareers.Net.

The student events - or "training contract boot camps" - are held across the country and are held around the same time as the law fairs.  The sessions include some of the following;

  • what does a graduate recruitment officer really look for in a CV;
  • interview technique (how do you manage your nerves and stand out at the interview or during the assessment day??);
  • the life of trainee solicitor (what can you expect and what do you need to know before you start);
  • how do you find the firm which is right for you, does size matter (are you suited to working in a international practice?);
  • how to manage your finances with the burden of overdrafts and student loans;
  • when and how to apply for a place at law school; and
  • options of financing if you can not find sponsorship.

Phew!  The events are full and aimed are targeting the burning questions that always seem to remain unanswered...

Following the presentations, there is a chance to chat to the speakers over refreshments.  Speakers include representatives from top firms, both in the region and in the City.  The TSG will be present to give you a bit of information about what we do and how they can start to get involved.

The 2006 events have completed for the year.  Keep your eyes peeled for the 2007 events.  They will be held across the country in Feb/March next year.

2006 Review

Now in its third year, the juggernaut that is LawCareers.Net's Training Contracts - Basic Training once again took to the road, spreading vital information up and down the country. This year, the team travelled to even more locations throughout England, including London, Nottingham, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol.

Here is a selection of what some happy attendees had to say about the event:

"The Training Contracts - Basic Training London event was very well organized and loaded with a lot of helpful information. The tips from the firms were helpful, inspirational and made me realize that the whole process is not as scary as some may claim." First-year law undergraduate

"Listening to information from such a variety of employers was useful. Regardless of how much information you read in the legal press/on the Internet, it is motivating and feels more realistic to hear it first-hand. I would definitely (and have!) recommend it to others." Second-year law undergraduate

And next year, there'll be more events in more locations (we might even be going international!), so keep your eyes peeled for information.

Find out more about these events and about becoming a trainee solicitor by contacting LawCareers.Net.  The website has a wealth of information and tips on getting a Training Contract - not to mention the handy guide on application closing dates!  Stay updated with LCN information by signing up to their newsletter.  For more information on the events, or to sign up, please contact info@LawCareers.Net or events@tsg.org

Trainee Events RO

Trainee Skills Events

2005 saw the relaunch of these events, and they were well received nationally.  The events are held in March/April, when trainees approaching qualification seriously must start thinking about their options for the forthcoming year.  The 2005 events were held in conjunction with Taylor Root Global Legal Recruitment, you can find out more about them on www.taylorroot.com.

Approaching qualification?  Confused?  Dazed?  Not sure what next?

Then these events are for you!

The TSG trainee events are held in conjunction with recruitment firm Taylor Root, who can provide the TSG member with their fantastic international experience.

The trainee events include a programme based on pre-qualification concerns facing trainees.  They had a variety of sessions including; options for the forthcoming year (the current state of the legal recruitment market playing a big part of this), growth areas in the profession, what happens after you have qualified, strategic financial planning, working for an international law firm, how to maintain a work/ life balance on qualification, how to manage stress, CV advice (what needs to be included / what to leave out, what do firms really like to see?).

Another full programme, but an incredibly useful one if you are qualifying within the next few months.

The events are there to support the TSG member approaching qualification who has not yet secured an NQ role and it at a loss at how to do this.  The workshops are there to give CV guidance, interview tips, ideas on career planning and tricky subjects like discipine change or working abroad.

The TSG Trainee Events have finished for 2006.

Stay tuned for the dates of 2007's events...

Newly Qualified Events

These are to be new for 2006 - watch this space!

The idea for the NQ events is to focus on the final year of the TSG membership.  The focus shifts for NQs, and you begin to think about career planning.  It is never too early to start focussing on the route to partnership, or on your long-term goals.  The financial planning element is also a big part for NQs, who may suddenly have enough money to buy a house or get a pension for the first time.  There is a wealth of questions for NQs, and these events will seek to answer these, and provide the skills necessary to move forward with your careers.

The events are coming to a town near you - register today to avoid disappointment!

Cardiff - Thursday 5th October
