Helpline FAQ
These are just examples of the typical questions asked and the type of advice the helpline can provide. However, this section is in no way intended to be comprehensive and if you need help we strongly advise you to pick up the phone and call us.
I have recently attended an interview with a law firm and they have already decided to make me an offer. I am very pleased with this but have another interview lined up in the next few weeks for a firm who I would much rather train with. I am not sure what I am able to do in this situation. Do I have to tell the first firm that I have another interview lined up and how long can I take to decide whether to accept their offer or not?
It is entirely up to you whether you decide to tell the first firm about your upcoming interview. However, most employers do appreciate that you will be applying to various firms and may end up with more than one offer of a training contract.
There is guidance approved by the Law Society which deals with recruitment. The Voluntary Guide to Good Practice in the Recruitment of Trainee Solicitors should be considered when accepting offers etc. Firms are not obliged to sign up to this code but if they do they must comply with certain requirements. For example offers must be made in writing and the applicant should be given 4 weeks within which to make a decision. The employer should also consider any requests for an extension of time if good reason is given.
You are able to check whether the firms you have applied to subscribe to this code by contacting the Law Society. It is also worth noting that the code advises that a trainee should only hold two offers at any one time. Should you require any further information then call the Legal Education and Training Department at the Law Society on 0870 606 2555.
